Why Genuine Leather Beats Synthetic Every Time
Walk into most shoe shops and you’ll notice the shelves are dominated by synthetic sneakers because they are cheaper compared to genuine leather. To the eye, at first glance, they can look almost identical, a well-made synthetic shoe can look every bit as sharp as leather.
The difference doesn’t show up on day one. It shows up three months in.
It’s easy to justify the lower price tag when you’re standing in the shop. It’s a lot harder to justify when you’re replacing the same pair of shoes 3 times a year.
How synthetic sneakers age
Synthetic (PU or “leatherette”) uppers are made from a fabric base coated in plastic. They look sharp out of the box, but that coating cracks and peels once it’s flexed thousands of times which is exactly what happens every time you walk. Most synthetic sneakers start showing visible creases and peeling within 3–6 months of regular wear.
How genuine leather ages instead
Real leather is a natural material it flexes without cracking, and instead of peeling, it develops a slight patina that most people read as character rather than wear. It also breathes, which matters more than people expect in Nairobi’s warmer months; synthetic uppers trap heat and moisture in a way leather doesn’t.
The cost math most people skip
A genuine leather sneaker usually costs more upfront. But if a synthetic pair needs replacing every 6–8 months and a leather pair reasonably lasts 2–3 years with basic care, the leather pair is cheaper per year of wear not to mention it looks better for longer.
